STEP back in time at Hever Castle & Gardens this August bank holiday.
Journey through History takes visitors from the age of the Saxons, via the Viking invasion and the Norman conquest, right up to Edwardian times when William Waldolf Astor used this fortune to restore and the castle.
In the grounds wander through the encampment to watch the Vikings and the Normans go head to head with weapons displays and see Tudor skirmishes.
Experience medieval life with demonstrations of crafts, archery, cooking and weaving. Step into the Tudor period and immerse yourself in the time when Hever Castle was Anne Boleyn’s childhood home. There will also be the opportunity to watch archery displays from the time of the Vikings through to the Tudors.
The popular Summer Jousting Tournament will be in full swing, so don’t miss the procession from the Castle forecourt as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn lead visitors through the grounds to the Jousting Arena. Battling it out in the saddle and on foot in one-to-one combat, the valiant knights will then compete for points to find this season’s ultimate champion.
Be entertained with music from the reign of Elizabeth I and learn how to dance Elizabethan style. Experience the Golden Age of Piracy and gain an insight into the Georgian period with arms displays, canon firing and battle skirmishes during the time of the Waldegraves’ ownership of Hever Castle.
Learn what it would have been like during the Edwardian period and then into World War 1 when the Astor family transformed marshland into the spectacular gardens you see today. Read about the history in the Castle and meet characters from the era in the grounds.
