Fire services standard bearer helps remember former sub-officer Mike

Kent Fire & Rescue Service standard bearer Chris Phipp bows his head in a mark of respect as the coffin of the former sub officer of Westerham fire station, Mike Wortley, is led into the town’s St Mary The Virgin Parish Church by vicar the Rev Kevin Barnard for a service of remembrance.

Born on Brasted Chart, Mike- he died aged 70- joined the fire service at Westerham in 1979 and was later promoted to sub officer in charge of the town’s station and crew.

He was presented with a long service and good conduct medal in 2002, minutes after attending a fatal crash in Westerham’s Croydon Road.

Mike, who moved into Westerham’s Brewery Cottages with his wife Julie – they married in the town’s church in 1972- in the early 70s, was a qualified technical illustrator and also worked at the former Black Eagle Brewery as a drayman.

He also set up and owned Central Print and Design in Westerham High Street which opened in 1990 and closed in 2002. He then worked as a freelance painter and decorator under the name Outridge Services named after his birthplace, Outridge Farm on Brasted Chart.

Mike is survived by his wife, daughter Clarissa and granddaughter Teagan.
